The Shopifist

Hello there. Return shipping is about to get taxed like regular shipping, B2B free-shipping rules finally click into place, and Stocky's read-only clock is ticking toward late November. Grab a coffee - the ops pile is real today.

In today’s newsletter, we’ll get into:

  • From October 23, Shopify Tax will charge tax on US return shipping fees - audit any manual workaround before then.
  • B2B buyers hide the discount code box, so free shipping on 3+ units needs an automatic discount aimed at company accounts.
  • Stocky's read-only window closes around end of November - pull purchase order exports now, because supplier lists are not a separate file.

SELL & CONVERT

🏢 B2B free shipping needs an automatic discount, not a code field. A merchant testing a company account noticed B2B checkout hides the discount code box, which broke the usual free-shipping coupon trick. Helpers confirmed Shopify can do this natively: create an automatic free-shipping discount, set a minimum of three items, and limit it to your B2B customers so retail buyers never see it. If automatic discounts are missing on B2B, Support can switch them on.

📈 BFCM prep talk is still thin - start with offers and creative, not vibes. Someone asked r/shopify_geeks how big stores actually prepare for Black Friday, and the useful reply was blunt: lock a real discount and shoot clever ad footage before you obsess over dashboards. Pair that with the boring ops work - stock counts, staff PINs, offline payments - so the promo does not outrun the warehouse. The thread is short, but the sequence is right: offer and creative first, then fulfillment reality.

🎯 A new app wants ad platforms to see your SKU stock levels. Skurai's builder pitched SKU-level signals that tell Meta, Google, TikTok, Pinterest, and Microsoft when a variant is about to sell out or sitting fat. The pitch: stop pouring budget into empty shelves and underfunding the ones you can ship. It is brand new and asking for merchant feedback, so treat it as a test, not a silver bullet - read the thread if inventory-blind ads burned you last peak.

MONEY & OPS

🧾 US return shipping fees get taxed starting October 23. Shopify Tax and Tax Platform will start taxing return shipping fees on US returns like any other shipping charge. You will see estimated tax when you create a return and the final amount when you process it, and it flows into tax reports. If a state leaves shipping untaxed, return shipping stays untaxed there too. Review any manual workaround before October 23 so you do not double-count tax once Shopify starts collecting it.

💸 Payouts can freeze again even after verification clears. One merchant said documents cleared, a payout of about $31,750 was scheduled, then Shopify asked for the same verification again, rejected it, and paused payments while orders sat unfulfilled. Replies were blunt that risk signals on the storefront can keep holds alive. If your money freezes after a green check, push for a human Payments review and clean anything on the site that looks like a fraud flag before you argue the paperwork.

📦 Stocky's read-only window closes around end of November. The 90-day read-only runway people keep mentioning lands near late November, and that is your last easy export window. Suppliers were never their own file - rebuild them from purchase order exports, which are the only sheet tying product, supplier, price, and date. Payment terms, MOQ notes, and supplier comments exist nowhere in the files, so write those down by hand while Stocky still opens. Column names differ between the report and the per-order download, so do not trust a tool that rejects the shape.

STORE & TOOLS

🧻 Store supplies belong in Shopify as hidden products, not a mystery module. A multi-store retailer asked how everyone tracks checkout bags, receipt paper, and toilet paper without a dedicated supplies tool. The consensus: keep each supply as a tracked variant, publish it to no sales channels, give it a Store Supplies product type, and use a saved Products view so staff stop scrolling past paper clips. Filter that type out of inventory value reports too, or receipt paper will inflate your numbers. Shopify will not track consumption for you - weekly counts plus POs are enough.

📋 A read-only restock planner is hunting Stocky refugees for feedback. Tallyfold reads order history and suggests order-by dates and quantities with safety stock and lead times, then drafts a purchase order file per supplier. It never writes inventory or creates POs inside Shopify, and stock history only starts on install day. Price starts around $39 a month with a 30-day trial, and it still has no reviews. The builder wants honest merchant pushback if you still reorder from a spreadsheet after Stocky.

SHIPPED

🖥️ The refreshed Shopify admin is ready to try in a sandbox store. ShopifyDevs says the admin refresh is available to test before it lands on every live shop. Search, notifications, and the store picker sit in a collapsible side nav, and Sidekick stays on every page. If you want staff to click around without risking BFCM week, open a throwaway store first and leave production alone until the layout feels familiar.
