The Shopifist

Hello there. No new Shopify releases over the weekend, so merchants filled the gap with hard questions. One store got billed $75 to file a $19.94 tax return, another found its home address on a customer's card statement, and Reddit is asking whether AI shoppers should pick your next theme change. Grab a coffee, this one is about the fine print.

In today’s newsletter, we’ll get into:

  • A small Florida merchant was charged a flat $75 by Shopify Tax automated filing on a $19.94 October return, and support said the fee is final once a return is filed.
  • Shopify Payments can share your verified physical address with card networks, so home-based sellers may see it on customer statements.
  • Merchants are testing Sidekick's AI-shopper theme suggestions, which Shopify itself says are not live A/B tests on real shoppers.

MONEY & OPS

🧾 A $75 filing fee on a $19.94 tax bill. Shopify Tax automated filing filed one small merchant's October Florida return without warning and charged a flat $75 on a $19.94 bill. The settings page only said no changes could be made, and the merchant thought they had until Jan 1 to opt out. Support removed Florida filing but would not waive the fee. If you sell small orders, check how this merchant got caught before your next return is filed.

🏠 Your home address can show up on card statements. A home-based seller found their residential address on a customer's credit card transaction. Support explained that Shopify Payments shares the verified physical business address with financial institutions, and some banks print it. PO boxes and commercial mailboxes are not accepted for verification. The seller is asking Shopify to keep that address internal, and the feature request on address privacy has other merchants weighing in.

⏳ Fighting a chargeback after you closed the store. A merchant with two chargebacks on a closed store asked for a short trial to submit evidence. Replies say there is no such trial: you follow the link in the chargeback email and pay for a plan to reopen. Each dispute has a due date 7 to 21 days after filing, and pressing Submit early locks your evidence, as the closed store chargeback thread explains.

SELL & CONVERT

🤖 Would you ship a theme change picked by AI shoppers? Since Oct 28, Sidekick drafts storefront changes and checks them against your live theme with simulated shoppers, testing only changes expected to lift add-to-cart. Shopify's own changelog says these are not live A/B tests on real people. One merchant who tried it says it rated their old site higher despite real conversion gains. The Reddit debate on AI shopper tests asks who has trusted a result.

🪙 USDC checkout passes $42 million settled. The payments protocol Shopify and Coinbase built on Base has settled about $42.1 million across more than 448,000 payments since June 2025, per a Base case study. That covers all activity on the open source protocol, not only Shopify sales. Shoppers pay no network fees and eligible merchants get paid in local currency on their normal payout schedule, as Shopifreaks reports.

📌 SEO and Pinterest finally paying off. A solo seller says months of SEO, social posts and Pinterest ads have turned into regular sales, with five orders in production heading to five different countries. It is a nice reminder that organic channels are slow before they are steady. If you need a lift going into the holidays, read what worked for this store and compare notes.

☕ A coffee store asks for traffic without ads. A coffee brand that has paid for Meta ads before says sales are close to zero and wants to grow organic traffic. The owner also suspects a conversion problem and shared the store for feedback. If you have turned a quiet store around without paid ads, share your traffic tips in the thread.

STORE & TOOLS

🍔 Grey lines in the Horizon mobile menu. A Plus merchant saw grey borders after each link in the Horizon theme's mobile menu, even though the same menu looks clean on desktop. A partner replied with a fix that takes one block of CSS pasted into Theme settings, then Custom CSS, in the theme editor. If your drawer menu looks off, copy the Horizon menu fix and test it on a duplicate theme first.

🔗 Letting a helper add products without a login. An app team wants merchants on plans without staff accounts to send a helper a revocable, expiring link that only allows creating product drafts. A reply says that should fit App Store rules if the merchant's own work stays inside the admin, with short expiries and a log of who made each draft. The App Store rules discussion is useful if you rely on outside help.
