The Shopifist

Hello there. A Canadian retailer woke up to paused payouts with no reason given, and German DHL orders quietly stopped getting their Delivered emails. On the brighter side, merchants shared Black Friday offers that shoppers actually believe. Grab a coffee and let's go.

In today’s newsletter, we’ll get into:

  • A store's Shopify Payments payouts were paused for a review of up to a week, and the advice is to get support's answer in writing and avoid a second ticket.
  • Native Delivered emails can go missing when a tracking app like ParcelPanel updates DHL Germany shipments that Shopify now tracks itself.
  • For Black Friday, merchants suggest showing the 30-day low price, smaller honest discounts and perks for repeat buyers instead of deeper cuts.

SELL & CONVERT

🏷️ Make your Black Friday sale look real. With everything on sale in November, one merchant asked how to convince shoppers a discount is genuine. Ideas in the thread: show the lowest price from the last 30 days, prefer a smaller honest discount, run the same offer every year and skip discounts in the month before. Others suggest early access or store credit for past buyers, a free gift or a lower free shipping threshold, all in the believable Black Friday thread.

🛒 Clicks from TikTok ads, but zero add-to-carts. A new pet products store is paying for TikTok traffic with decent clicks and click-through rate, yet nobody adds anything to the cart. One reply says a gap like that usually means the ad promises something the product page does not deliver. The advice in the zero add-to-cart thread: match the first screen to the ad, show price and benefit without scrolling, and surface shipping costs early.

📣 More ways to buy ChatGPT ads. OpenAI signed Magnite and PubMatic to sell ChatGPT ad space that would otherwise go unsold, according to The Information. Advertisers set budgets and bids through those platforms, while OpenAI controls placement, and volumes start small. They join Criteo, Amazon DSP and OpenAI's own Ads Manager, and OpenAI says ChatGPT ads reached a $1B annualized run rate, per Shopifreaks' ChatGPT ads report.

MONEY & OPS

⏸️ Payouts paused with no reason given. A Canadian retailer with two stores and a website saw Shopify Payments payouts paused on Nov 4 for a review that may take up to a week, with no documents requested. Sales still go through, but the money does not reach the bank. Replies in the paused payouts thread suggest getting support's answer in writing, checking the account owner inbox and spam, and not opening a second ticket.

🧮 Repricing when a duty rate changes. An importer asked how merchants react when duties move. One detailed reply: keep HS codes and country of origin on every product, follow official customs alerts, and use Cost per item as your full landed cost so margins stay honest. Update costs in bulk first, then reprice only the SKUs below target, or adjust a single market's catalog, as laid out in the duty repricing thread.

STORE & TOOLS

📦 Delivered emails vanished for DHL Germany orders. A merchant using ParcelPanel noticed customers stopped getting Shopify's Delivered email. Support says Shopify started tracking DHL Germany shipments directly in October, while the app updates tracking with notifications off, so the email gets skipped. One reply fixed it by turning off the ParcelPanel setting that writes status back to Shopify notifications, per the missing Delivered emails thread.

🤖 Sidekick can now search the web and run A/B tests. Shopify says Sidekick can now search the web, run A/B tests with SimGym and make several store changes at once. You approve the plan and Sidekick carries it out. Separately, a developer found Sidekick could not find a new Flow trigger from their app, and Shopify staff said search indexing likely lags behind publishing. The Sidekick update on X has a short demo.

🔍 Is Sidekick enough for your SEO? One merchant has been using Sidekick to check the store, help optimize SEO and rescan the score for improvements, and asks whether that does as good a job as a marketing agency charging by the month. If you have tried both, weigh in on the Sidekick SEO question.

🛡️ Test app network access on dev stores. App developers can now check their network access settings on a dev store with a new feature preview. Links to hosts missing from the allowed list show the exit warning, and the browser console flags storefront requests to servers that are not listed. It only warns and blocks nothing. Shopify recommends every app set these up, per the network access changelog.
