Hello there. Monday's Shopify news is about how stores get built and how orders get out the door: Canvas puts Sidekick on a full-store design surface, and a peak-season fulfillment guide plus partner notes cover market-driven shipping before holiday volume hits.

In today’s newsletter, we’ll get into:

  • Canvas is rolling out as a visual workspace where merchants build a custom store with Sidekick across every page, not one template at a time.
  • Shopify's peak-season fulfillment guide covers batching up to 250 orders, market-driven shipping opt-in from Oct 1, and ship-and-pickup on Plus.
  • Partners should test apps against market-driven shipping and split shipping before the July 1, 2027 default cutoff.

SHIPPED

🎨 Canvas turns the whole store into a Sidekick design surface. Shopify introduced Canvas, a new design workspace rolling out over the coming days. Merchants can see every page laid out together, pan and zoom, and build with Sidekick in real time on a render of the real theme code, not a static preview. Sidekick asks questions, remembers preferences and edits theme files directly. Shopify says it is early and does not replace the existing editor yet, so treat it as a preview while gaps close.

📦 Peak-season fulfillment tools you can set up before volume hits. Shopify's staff blog walks through peak fulfillment features for 2026: package-aware rates from product dimensions, market-driven shipping opt-in from Oct 1, ship and pickup in one order on Plus and Enterprise (wider in 2027), split shipping at checkout, batches of up to 250 orders with scan-to-verify, UPS return labels in the U.S., and delivery photos on supported carriers. Set them up now so the team already knows the flow when November arrives.

🧭 Partners: market shipping and split shipping head toward a 2027 default. The Partners blog maps the next generation of fulfillment: market-driven shipping moved shipping options into Markets, with merchant opt-in from Oct 1, 2026 and a hard default on July 1, 2027. Ship and pickup in one order is in Test Drive for Plus and Enterprise, with Cart API support expanding today, Oct 12. Split shipping phases in by merchant cohort through the same July 2027 finish line. Apps that touch delivery profiles or fulfillment logic need testing before holiday installs warn on incompatibility.

🎭 Culture moves into commerce, and Shopify published the data. A Shopify Data Science piece argues that commerce now moves at the speed of culture, with entrepreneurs turning big cultural moments into products you can hold. The post shares research on how fast that happens and how it shapes what people buy and share. Useful framing if you plan drops around events, memes or seasonal moments rather than a static catalog calendar.

SELL & CONVERT

🥩 Frozen beef shipping at $19.99 a box is killing checkouts. A cattle seller running Shopify sees carts die at checkout because shipping is $19.99 per box, while local pickup works fine. They have already tried several fixes and are asking what still converts for high-shipping perishables. If you sell cold-chain or heavy goods, the thread is a live case study in pickup versus ship tradeoffs.

⚙️ What is the first default you change on a new Shopify store? A merchant asks which defaults people fix first on a fresh store: checkout settings, notification emails, shipping profiles, markets and more. Checkout and notification templates come up often, and the thread is collecting the rest of the launch checklist. Handy if you spin up client stores and want a shared first-day punch list.

MONEY & OPS

💳 Verified Shopify Payments, but every checkout fails instantly. A U.S. merchant says Shopify Payments is fully verified under their personal identity, yet every checkout fails with processing_error, including test mode, and tier-2 support is stuck. They are hunting anyone who has seen the same backend glitch. Worth a skim if your payments onboarding looks green but live charges never clear.

🧾 A plain-English VAT primer for online sellers. Shopify published a 2026 guide to what VAT is used for, covering how value-added tax works in places like the UK and Mexico and when online sellers need to register. It is a refresher, not a tax filing walkthrough, but useful before you expand into markets that collect VAT at checkout.

STORE & TOOLS

🏷️ Still no clean way to keep discount codes off sale items per market. A developer selling across markets with fixed prices cannot stop discount codes from applying to items already marked down in the buyer's market, whether the code is native or from an app. They also use retail catalogs for POS. Three gaps in the current discount rules are blocking the setup, so multi-market merchants with sale flags should watch the thread for workarounds.

🧩 A free Chrome extension adds dark mode and denser admin tables. Beacon Wave Studio shipped a free Chrome extension for the Shopify admin with dark mode, 250 rows per page and paste-from-Excel into the bulk editor. It targets the browser-side annoyances they kept hearing from merchants. App-maker promo, but the feature list matches real admin friction if you live in large product grids.

🛠️ Every extra settings toggle becomes another support ticket. An app builder argues that simplicity is a support-surface choice: every toggle is a place a merchant can leave something half-finished, and another place theme or app conflicts hide. Living in the tickets taught them that fewer options often beat more configuration. Worth a read if you ship merchant-facing settings and wonder why support volume tracks feature flags.

ON THE CALENDAR

📅 Shopify Editions remains the twice-yearly product dump. Shopify's Editions hub is still the place that gathers everything new across the platform every six months. Bookmark it when you want the long list of product changes in one spot rather than chasing scattered blog posts.
