The Shopifist

Hello there. Shopify's changelog and newsroom had nothing new since Friday, so today is about the setting you may want to change before October 28: Meta will start sending ad taps to its own product pages. Plus a merchant tracking a fake checkout that skims card details, and practical answers on B2B pickup, barcode scanners and BFCM upsells.

In today’s newsletter, we’ll get into:

  • From October 28, taps on Facebook and Instagram ads open a catalog page inside the app unless you switch it off per ad in Advantage+ Creative.
  • A merchant says shoppers on three stores were sent to a cloned checkout that collects card details, then back to the real Shopify checkout.
  • B2B pickup in store is off by default on Shopify and needs a request to Support, which can explain why it vanishes at B2B checkout.

SELL & CONVERT

📱 Meta will send ad taps to in-app product pages from October 28. Meta is switching on product browsing in Facebook and Instagram ads on October 28 unless you opt out first. A tap on the ad opens a full-screen catalog page inside the app with your products, prices and descriptions, and shoppers need a second tap to reach your store. The opt-out is a per-ad toggle in Advantage+ Creative and Destination settings. Meta says an August test with about 117,700 advertisers lifted conversions 3% on average.

🛍️ Where to put BFCM upsells without hurting checkout. A merchant asked whether to show Black Friday upsells on the product page, cart, post-purchase or thank you page. One detailed reply advises against anything that interrupts the main purchase: test a single offer, on mobile, with price and shipping clear. Set a baseline first, compare revenue per session, checkout completion and refunds rather than take rate, and drop the offer if checkout completion slips even when order value rises.

🧴 Six weeks of Meta ads, $2,300 spent and four sales. A marketer running Meta ads for a US skincare brand since early September is asking for help after four sales on $2,300 of spend. The product sells for $135, or $121.50 on subscription, with free shipping and a free mini gift, and it targets women 45 and over. If you sell a premium product to an older audience, the thread is a useful check on your own ad results.

MONEY & OPS

🚨 A cloned checkout is skimming cards on more stores. A merchant reports that shoppers on three of its stores were redirected to a counterfeit checkout at checkout-guard[.]top that shows their real basket, collects card and billing details, shows a payment error, then sends them back to the genuine checkout. The resulting orders look normal in admin. Another merchant links it to the checkout hijack seen earlier this month through app extensions. Review your installed apps and test your own checkout in a private window.

🚚 Etsy tests paying part of the shipping on some US orders. Etsy is running a randomized test that caps calculated shipping on some qualifying US orders and pays the difference, so sellers still get their full rate. In Etsy's example, a $10 rate with a $7.99 cap means the buyer pays $7.99 and Etsy covers $2.01, shown in Order Details as Etsy-funded shipping. Etsy has not said whether $7.99 is the real cap or how its fees apply.

🇮🇳 India pushes its new UPI merchant fee past Diwali. The body that runs India's UPI network has postponed a 0.4% merchant fee on payments above 2,000 rupees, about $21, until after Diwali, with the start date still to be announced. Retailers had pushed back and some threatened to stop taking UPI. If you sell to Indian shoppers, free UPI processing lasts through the festive rush, but plan for the fee afterwards.

STORE & TOOLS

🏬 Why B2B checkout may hide local pickup. A merchant on the Grow plan asked why B2B checkout drops local pickup once a third-party carrier-calculated rate is added. A reply explains that pickup in store is off by default for B2B and has to be switched on by Shopify Support, while local delivery is not available at B2B checkout at all. Once pickup is on, it shows for both B2B and direct buyers, and shipping profiles cannot limit it to B2B buyers.

🔦 Check your barcode scanner before buying a new POS Hub. A shop owner tired of Bluetooth scanners dropping out wants a corded model but worries it means a new POS Hub and stand. A reply suggests checking whether the corded scanner can run in keyboard mode and plug straight into a USB port with an adapter, and confirming it is on Shopify's supported POS hardware list before spending money on a Hub.

🛒 updateCart does not refresh the cart drawer on Dawn themes. A developer reports that Shopify.actions.updateCart() saves the item but leaves the cart icon and drawer unchanged on Dawn-family themes until the page is refreshed, while Horizon themes update as expected. The section request returns only cart JSON, without the HTML for those theme pieces. If an app or custom button adds items this way on a Dawn-based store, test the cart count before BFCM.
