Hello there. Monday for merchants: an EU seller says Shopify Tax quietly stopped adding UK VAT to orders over £135 on Sep 29, and support's explanation keeps changing. Elsewhere, store owners debug Meta add-to-carts that never become orders, split freight into cost per item now that Stocky is gone, and wonder what a corrected 1099-K means for taxes already filed.

In today’s newsletter, we’ll get into:

  • A Swedish merchant says Shopify Tax stopped charging UK VAT on orders over £135 shipped from the EU on Sep 29, with support later saying the logic now follows where an order is fulfilled from.
  • Community replies lay out how to debug Meta ads that drive add-to-carts but no orders, and how to spread freight into cost per item by value, weight or quantity after Stocky.
  • A seller got a corrected 2025 1099-K after filing, the App Store added about 1,600 apps in a month, and Canvas keeps rolling out as a live design surface with Sidekick.

MONEY & OPS

🧾 Shopify Tax quietly stopped charging UK VAT on some EU orders. A Swedish merchant shipping DDP to the UK says UK VAT vanished from orders over £135 on the afternoon of Sep 29, after nearly two years of using the UK location workaround from Shopify's own help article. Support first blamed a missing address, then said the logic now follows where an order is fulfilled from, with no announcement. If you sell into the UK from the EU, check your recent UK orders today.

📦 How to split freight into cost per item now that Stocky is gone. Receiving a purchase order no longer spreads freight or duty into cost per item, so a forum thread walks through the landed cost math by hand: split by quantity, by value, or by weight. One reply says value is the common default, weight suits bulky goods and inbound case weight beats the shipping weight in Shopify. Remember to blend the new cost with stock already on the shelf.

📑 A corrected 2025 1099-K arrived after the taxes were filed. A small seller of physical products says Shopify sent a corrected 2025 1099-K after they had already filed, on an original form showing roughly $100,000 in gross payments, and is asking whether that is reason enough to move to BigCommerce. If you sell in the US, check your tax documents in admin for a reissued form before you assume last year's filing is closed.

⏳ The free trial ended, but the store still works. What now? A new merchant whose three-month free period ended cancelled their subscription, yet the store is still accessible and running normally. They want to know whether Shopify will freeze or deactivate it automatically, and how long that takes. If you are winding down a test store, the replies are a useful reminder to check billing status rather than assume the shop has closed.

SELL & CONVERT

🛒 Meta ads bring add-to-carts, so where are the orders? A merchant asks what to check first when ads drive carts but not purchases, and replies give a clear order of checks. Compare Meta's count with Shopify's sessions with cart additions report, since duplicate pixel events often inflate it. Then place a real test order on your phone, look for late shipping costs or missing payment methods, and read the abandoned checkouts list before blaming the creative.

🔍 How do you keep an eye on competitor prices? A store owner who watches a few competitor product pages by hand wants to know what others use when they only need price and stock changes, not a full repricing app: a spreadsheet, a lightweight app, or still manual checks. If you have a cheap, reliable setup for tracking a handful of rival SKUs, this is a thread worth answering.

📱 Meta's Muse app hit 5 million downloads in 22 days. Shopifreaks reports, citing Sensor Tower estimates via Yahoo Finance, that Meta's Muse app passed 5 million downloads in its first 22 days while only available in the US and Canada. ChatGPT took 56 days to reach that mark, Claude 49 and Grok 103. For merchants who sell through Meta ads and shops, it is a sign of where shopper attention may be moving.

STORE & TOOLS

🧩 The App Store added about 1,600 apps in a single month. A developer forum post citing letsmetrix data says the Shopify App Store now holds 30,649 apps from 18,763 vendors, but most new arrivals are discount, upsell, SEO and analytics tools in categories that already hold over 1,000 apps each. For merchants, a longer list often means more versions of the same thing, so compare reviews and real features before installing.

SHIPPED

🎨 Canvas edits a live render of your store, not a static preview. Shopify's Canvas design surface is still rolling out after its Oct 1 launch. The detail worth knowing: changes made with Sidekick land on a render of the real code behind your store, and you can preview each page with full interactivity, different products and collections, and different screen sizes. Sidekick also asks questions and proposes approaches as it builds, so check admin for access this week.

🗂️ Collection Sources will change what merchandising apps can do. Shopify's partners blog on the new Collection Sources API in the 2026-07 Admin API version means collections can combine several sources, target specific variants, reference other collections and include shareable sources authored by apps. If you rely on a merchandising, reviews or subscriptions app to shape collections, ask its developer whether native Collection Sources support is on their roadmap.
