The Shopifist

Hello there. Tuesday for merchants: Shop can now recognize shoppers while they browse your store, which means faster checkout, carts that follow buyers across devices and a pre-filled Shop Pay button. Elsewhere, sellers push back on a thinner Order Risk box, fight bot swarms, run the break-even ROAS math and size up TikTok Shop's new box-free returns with UPS.

In today’s newsletter, we’ll get into:

  • Shop now verifies shoppers before they buy, so checkout loads faster, carts sync across devices, Shop Pay shows the last card used, and Shop reminds buyers about carts they left behind.
  • Merchants say the Order Risk box now shows just three summary lines instead of address, CVV and IP checks, while another store fights 500 to 1,500 bot visits a day.
  • Shopify data says nearly 10% of new shops made a first sale within a day in 2025, a Reddit thread puts break-even ROAS near 2.1 on a $60 order, and TikTok Shop adds UPS drop-off returns.

SELL & CONVERT

🧮 What ROAS do you need just to break even? A Reddit thread lays out a simple break-even ROAS formula: one divided by the share of an order left after product cost, shipping, payment fees and returns. On a $60 order with $18 product cost, $8 shipping, about $2 in fees and $3 in returns, roughly 48% is left, so break-even sits near 2.1. Repeat purchases change the math, and the poster asks who counts them.

📦 TikTok Shop adds box-free returns through UPS drop-off points. TikTok Shop is teaming up with UPS's Happy Returns so US shoppers can drop unwanted items at nearly 10,000 return bars in Ulta Beauty, Staples and UPS Store locations, no box or label needed. Sellers can offer it whether they ship themselves or use TikTok Shop fulfillment, and an AI tool flags suspicious returns for human review. Reuters later corrected its report to say the deal is not exclusive.

⚡ New shops are reaching a first sale faster than ever. Shopify's newsroom shares new data on how fast sellers react to big cultural moments. In 2025, nearly 10% of new shops made their first sale within a day of signing up, up 43% in three years, and half reach a first sale in about three weeks. During the Knicks' 2026 playoff run, more than 3,000 shops listed orange-and-blue products, typically selling within three days.

MONEY & OPS

🕵️ Merchants miss the detail the Order Risk box used to show. A store owner says the Order Risk box used to list address, postal code and CVV matches, payment attempts, cards used, IP address and proxy checks, but now shows just three summary lines. They use MaxMind too, and ask whether old filters such as billing postal code mismatches still apply, and how IP blocking works when the IP is no longer shown. Others are weighing in.

🤖 A model kit store is getting 500 to 1,500 bot visits a day. An anime and model kit seller says bots are swarming the store, burning through their shipping quote app and trying to order items priced under 50 cents, which they have since removed. The accounts appear to come from Colombia and Philadelphia, and blockers have not helped so far. If you have beaten a bot wave like this, the thread wants your fix.

🏷️ Has anyone tried OverlayIQ against first-order discount abuse? A merchant is looking at an app called OverlayIQ to stop shoppers reusing first-time discounts under new email addresses. It promises to intercept the code before the sale, which would also save card processing fees. The catch: they cannot find reviews online and it is not in the Shopify App Store, so they are asking anyone who has used it before installing.

🚀 Most founders say they wish they had started sooner. A Shopify and Harris Poll survey across five markets looks at why people who feel ready still do not start. 93% of aspiring US founders feel at least somewhat ready, yet have not begun. Between 23% and 33% of current founders say AI lets them do things they could not otherwise, and up to 39% say it cuts the time needed to run their business.

STORE & TOOLS

🔐 Keep staff from turning D2C customers into B2B companies. A merchant running a B2B store and a separate D2C store for subscriptions wants to hide the Companies link in admin. A community reply says it cannot be hidden, but Companies has its own staff permissions, and staff with Customers access before January 31, 2024 got them automatically. Remove create and delete rights in the role under Settings, Users and permissions, then test.

🔲 Square size pills in Dawn take two settings and a short code snippet. A Dawn store owner wanted boxed size pills that match the Add to cart button. Replies point to Theme settings, Variant pills: set border thickness to 1px, opacity to 100% and corner radius to 0. For equal squares, a short Custom CSS rule on the pill labels sets a fixed width and height, and sold-out sizes keep their usual crossed-out look.

🎳 What works for an unstaffed Shopify POS self-checkout? A bowling pro shop that moved locations wants to put an iPad self-checkout in its old retail room so league bowlers can still buy tapes, cleaners and other small accessories, plus pick up online ball orders from old lockers. They already run Shopify for POS, the website and inventory, and are asking what self-checkout setup other merchants recommend.

🎯 Discount rollouts can leave some buyers with no discount at all. A cart progress bar developer found that tiered discounts and partial rollouts clash. With one tier switched off for half of traffic, the lower tier's Function could not tell, stayed silent, and a $1,480 cart got no discount at all. Nothing in Liquid, cart.js or the Storefront API shows the buyer's rollout arm. If you test discounts with rollouts, check tiered offers.

SHIPPED

🛒 Shop now recognizes shoppers before they reach checkout. Shopify's changelog says Shop can verify who a shopper is while they browse, not just at purchase. For Shop users that means faster checkout, carts that sync across devices, one-tap sign-in to customer accounts and a Shop Pay button that shows the card they last used. Browsing also syncs to their Shop account, so Shop can remind them about viewed items and abandoned carts.

🧪 Shopify Engineering is testing storefronts with AI shoppers. Shopify Engineering is presenting three research projects at COLM2026. SimGym runs storefront A/B tests with AI agents in a live browser, using personas built from real clickstreams, and cuts test cycles from weeks to under an hour. ShopGym turns live stores into sandboxes for agent benchmarks, and SimPersona learns distinct buyer types, with 78% conversion-rate alignment across 8.37 million buyers.
