The Shopifist

Hello there. Thursday's lead is a tax headache: a merchant says their store just lost automated tax filing, and Shopify's help center confirms the service is closed to new enrollment. Elsewhere, POS apps get two discount and cart fixes, and the founders of Neuro explain how a gum nobody understood ended up in Costco.

In today’s newsletter, we’ll get into:

  • A Reddit merchant says Shopify ended their automated tax filing and pointed them to Numeral or Zamp, and Shopify's help pages now say automated filing is closed to new enrollment.
  • Shopify POS 11.15 now reports percentage discounts as a percentage, and POS app cart changes on the 2026-10 API now fail loudly when POS does not apply them.
  • Shopify's blog profiles Neuro, a gum brand that grew from a dorm room to a nine-figure business by sampling millions of people before chasing big retail.

MONEY & OPS

🧮 Automated tax filing is pulling back. A US merchant on Reddit says their store just lost automated tax filings, and Shopify suggested moving to Numeral or Zamp without saying why. Shopify's help center now says automated filing is closed to new enrollment, applies only to stores already enrolled, and has a page on filing after automated filing ends. If you rely on it, check your Taxes settings now so a return does not slip.

🚚 What happens when you drop free shipping? A store owner went down a free shipping rabbit hole and found two Shopify owners with almost opposite stories. One had been giving away six figures a year in free shipping, kept raising the threshold, then removed it altogether. The thread asks whether anyone else took away a perk customers supposedly expected and found that buyers simply did not care. Useful reading before you set holiday shipping rules.

SELL & CONVERT

🍬 Neuro sampled its way from a dorm room into Costco. Shopify's blog has the story of Neuro, the energy and focus gum that founders Kent Yoshimura and Ryan Chen started in 2015. With a product nobody had seen before, they had to explain it to every buyer, spent over a year with lawyers on a supplement label for gum, and say they will sample more than 3 million people this year. Neuro is now a nine-figure brand in CVS, Whole Foods, Walmart and Costco.

📈 A store that converts at 10% but gets no visitors. An Australian seller of custom pet portraits, both digital and print on demand, says about 10% of visitors buy but hardly anyone visits. They admit the numbers are small, so the rate may not hold, and they are asking how to get more eyes on the store without wrecking what works. If you have scaled a niche gift store, the thread is looking for practical traffic ideas.

STORE & TOOLS

🧩 Getting variant data onto every new order. A developer on the Shopify dev forum shared a Flow setup that copies variant metafields onto each order, so downstream systems get per-line data for checkout, draft, API and subscription orders. A Shopify staff member replied that the approach is pretty typical, that Flow does not guarantee event delivery but rarely misses one, and that it retries with backoff for up to 36 hours. Worth a look if your warehouse or ERP needs product data on orders.

SHIPPED

🧾 POS apps now read percentage discounts correctly. Shopify POS 11.15 changes how percentage discounts are reported to POS apps. A 25% discount on a $200 item now comes through as 25 instead of the 50 dollars taken off, on every POS extension version. Apps that treated that number as money need an update, so if a loyalty, savings or receipt app on your POS shows odd discount totals, ask the developer whether they have handled it.

🛒 POS cart changes will stop failing silently. In the 2026-10 version of POS extensions, cart changes now fail when POS does not confirm them, for example after the cashier has moved to payment. Earlier versions reported success either way, so an app could show a fee or discount as applied when the cart never changed. Apps on 2026-07 and earlier are unaffected until they upgrade, so this mostly matters to whoever builds your custom POS tools.

🔐 Apps can give back write access they no longer need. From Admin API version 2027-01, apps installed the Shopify-managed way can downgrade optional write permissions to read only, for example from editing products to just viewing them. Separately, the Customer Account API now caps each customer at 3,000 requests a minute per store, shared across all apps. Neither needs action from most merchants, but fewer write permissions on installed apps is good news for store security.
