A summary of everything we covered between 12 and 18 October 2026, grouped so you can see the shape of the week rather than seven separate days.

AI agents moved right up to the checkout

The biggest thread of the week was shopping agents that can actually pay. On the 13th Google started rolling out a Merchant Center hub that lets US merchants add a checkout button to listings in AI Mode and Gemini. On the 14th Shopify launched Shop MCP, which lets agents like Claude and ChatGPT search Shopify Catalog, build carts and complete Shop Pay checkout, with those orders appearing in your admin like any other. On the 17th Checkout MCP and Cart MCP began carrying buyer consent choices, such as email or SMS opt-in, from the agent to your store. If an agent sends nothing, Shopify applies your default for the buyer's country.

The evidence on how ready stores are was mixed. A test of 122 Shopify stores, covered on the 17th, found agents could open a checkout on every one, but the policy tool never gave shipping cost or delivery timing. On the 18th purchases through agents were reported growing about 43% a month, while only 3% of the online retailers BrightEdge serves let agents finish a checkout. Shopify's own AI kept spreading inside the admin too: Canvas put Sidekick on a full-store design surface on the 12th, and Sidekick moved into the checkout and customer accounts editor on the 14th, with more on what it does in Checkout Blocks on the 15th. Clear product data and plainly titled policy pages matter more each week.

Shipping and fulfillment got ready for peak

On the 12th Shopify's peak-season guide and the Partners blog laid out the plan: market-driven shipping moves shipping options into Markets, with merchant opt-in from October 1, 2026 and a hard default on July 1, 2027, alongside ship and pickup in one order on Plus and Enterprise and split shipping at checkout. On the 15th came a warning for every checklist: on API version 2026-10, a new or reinstalled shipping app no longer lands in your General profile automatically, so live rates can silently disappear at checkout. Test an order in every zone. And on the 14th a Canadian merchant said Canada Post live rates stopped working after the carrier required multi-factor authentication.

Then the tools arrived. On the 16th Royal Mail became a pickup point provider across the UK, and a new Shopify Flow action began buying shipping labels automatically for orders that match your rules. On the 17th batch fulfillment grouped up to 250 fulfillments into one pick, print and pack workflow, and shops in the Netherlands and Poland gained discounted DHL eCommerce labels with no fee on top of their plan.

Customs, tax and payouts that need a closer look

Cross-border rules tightened. On the 14th we flagged that from November 1, parcels shipped to EU consumers from outside the EU need product identifiers for customs: your SKU, the maker's model or part number and the barcode where one exists. On the 15th a guide to HS codes listed four common mistakes, including stopping at six digits when the US wants ten, and the UK was expected to make Amazon, eBay and Temu collect VAT for sellers with over £90,000 in annual sales. Canadian sellers asked on the 15th and the 16th how closely Shopify's checkout duty calculator matches what couriers actually charge.

Payouts produced the week's warnings. On the 13th one merchant found Capital repayments listed as plain Adjustments, the same label used for chargebacks, and another had their payout account switched to a hacker's details. On the 12th a verified merchant saw every checkout fail with processing_error, and on the 17th another said payouts had stalled despite the all-clear email. If you carry a Capital balance, reconcile payouts against your repayment schedule, and review staff access and two-step login while you are at it.

Promotions, ads and the bots behind them

Deal season data started rolling in. On the 13th October's Prime Big Deal Days drove $9.86B in US online sales across all retailers, up 8.5% on last year. Before you build your own offers, the 14th explained why bundle discounts may not stack: on stores not on Plus, a Buy X get Y deal cannot receive other product discounts. A related gap from the 12th: there is still no clean way to keep discount codes off items already marked down in a buyer's market.

Meta shaped the ad side. On the 14th Meta pointed advertisers to three levers for steering placements now that manual controls are gone from sales, leads, engagement and app campaigns. On the 18th Meta said it will switch on in-app product browsing in existing Facebook and Instagram ads on October 28 unless advertisers opt out. And on the 16th merchants reported another wave of fake checkouts from card-testing bots, flooding abandoned carts and analytics. If your abandoned-cart numbers spike with no sales lift, check bot protection before you rewrite your recovery emails.
